Avnet has announced the BF518F FMC Development Kit, the first Blackfin-based development platform running Microsoft .NET Micro Framework. This VITA57-compatible platform features Analog Devices' Blackfin BF518 processor, which offers both high performance and low power. Avnet says the platform speed development time and effectiveness--particularly for embedded industrial applications--and I believe it. The board uses the new As I mentioned in a previous blog, I'm a big fan of VITA 57, which is also known as Field Programmable Mezzanine Card (FMC). These cards make it super-easy to build production-ready designs out of off-the shelf modules.

The BF518F FMC Development Kit can operate either as a standalone, or as an FMC Mezzanine Module connected to any VITA 57.1-compliant carrier board. Features of the board include:
- 400 MHz ADSP-BF518F Blackfin processor
- 64 MB Micron PC-133 SDRAM
- 4 MB Numonyx parallel NOR Flash
- 4 Mb SPI Flash (internal to CPU)
- 10/100 Ethernet with IEEE 1588 support
- SD/MMC card slot
- One RS-232 port (DB-9F)
- One USB 2.0 mini-AB port
- Supports external TFT-LCD conforming to Avnet LCD Interface (ALI) specification
- Optional add-on debug agent
Target applications include:
- Industrial automation HMI
- Smart energy management
- Network-enabled instrumentation
- Test and measurement
