It's Hard to Beat Free, especially for a PBX.

I was poking around the Internet looking for free stuff. My search was for the “bones” of an off-grid generator start and shut down board and software. I didn’t find that application, but I did find a really cool free software product for creating a PBX system. http://www.freepbx.com is for both developers and people searching for a Business Phone System (or a really fancy home one). FreePBX is a code branch of the , Asterisk^® software package for PBXs.

Looking For Phone Service?

We can't quite give you the phone service for the same price (free) as the PBX, but if you would like top rate SIP service you can now get it through the freePBX web site. The SIP service works with FreePBX while delivering top rate SIP trunking using the best VoIP infrastructure available.

Trunk lines are unlimited through the FreePBS services, and cost a relatively small amount per month.

So my immediate thought was a development board plus this software and I could have a full featured phone system at a small amount of money per month for phone lines and small money for the hardware itself.

Oh, I have had experience with ASterisk. I must say it's a great code base and very flexible.
