'Baby (your iPhone) can drive my car!'

Here's a real killer app for your iPhone. Researchers at Freie Universitaet Berlin have developed an application which uses the device as a remote control for a specially equipped van dubbed "The Spirit of Berlin."

The "driver" watches an image from a camera mounted on the vehicle's front grill and "operates" the steering by tilting the iPhone, and brakes and throttle via touchscreen strokes. Wi-Fi commands from the iPhone control the "power transmission" system in the car.
The school's Artificial Intelligence Group is exploring use of autonomous vehicles. Project Director Raul Rojas envisions having occupants picked up and dropped off by driverless taxis—removing the need for many to own a car.
