Cool Beans: The art of productive laziness in project management

Here's an interesting article about project managers and project management from the Chief Information Officer's (CIO) website at www.cio.com (who knew they had their own site?)

Over the course of my career I've worked under many managers. Some of them were absolutely dreadful, while others just "got it". There are lots of ways in which managers can suck, but one that really go on my nerves was when the manager would be showing a visitor around a project we were working on and you could hear him taking all of the credit. You know the sort of thing: "The team was hopelessly bogged down, and then I thought of this incredibly good idea that saved the day!" This is also the type of manager who typically tries to assign any blame for any mistakes to anyone but himself or herself.

By comparison, I've also known some great managers who really inspired every member of the team to do their very best. I'm thinking of one guy in particular from my now dim and distant early career -- he didn't micromanage us, but he always managed to know what every member of the team was doing and the status of everything. When visitors came, he always managed to share the success: "So we were a bit bogged down, and then Steve suggested we should do xyz ... there he is now ... Steve, come over here and explain how you came up with that idea..."

But I'm wandering off into the weeds as usual... the point of this blog is that my old chum Jay Dowling just pointed me at an interesting article about The Art of Productive Laziness in project management.

Lazy

This is rather interesting on all sorts of levels. First I was surprised to discover that Chief Information Officers actually have their own website at www.cio.com. If the truth be told, I don’t actually have a clue what a CIO does. On the other hand, they probably don’t have a clue what I do either, so that's all right.

Having actually discovered this site, the other thing that surprised me was that they have interesting articles like this one. I mean, here's a project manager who is actually telling other project managers that it's unproductive to run around micromanaging things (duh!).

Anyway, I found this article to be very interesting, and I'm looking forward to spending some time meandering my way around this new (to me) site.
