WiMAX, HSPA+, and LTE: A Comparative Analysis Hot

If you are looking for a very chewy guide to the latest enhancements to WiMAX, HSPA, and LTE, this white paper is a great place to start.

Written by Doug Gray for the WiMAX forum, this white paper was and contains detailed specifications for WiMAX, HSPA+, and LTE. It compares WiMAX to HSPA+ and then WiMAX to LTE, concluding that (not surprisingly) WiMAX products will have advantages. The paper makes a good point, however, that WiMAX mobile products began in 2008, with more than 500 deployments. Projections suggest up to 140 million subscribers by 2013, which suggests that WiMAX will have early gains in driving down subscriber station costs thanks to volume.

Perhaps the most interesting section is the one on Migration Path Options for Today's Mobile Operators. This part addresses network operators need to expand capacity, particularly in high-density urban areas. Here's a clip: "Although HSPA+ gives WCDMA operators a relatively straightforward upgrade path for additional capacity in the access network, it does not offer the attributes that WiMAX or LTE can provide. Operators wanting to move to a truly next generation network can consider WiMAX today or wait for LTE in a year or two."
