Synfora bites the dust Hot

The industry has known that there were too many players in the high-level synthesis market and a shake-out was inevitable. It was also known that Synopsys needed some technology and this is perhaps the worst kept secret amongst the recent acquisition – except well this was not an acquisition, it was a purchase of assets, which means that it went for fire sale prices. No surprise there either.  It was also rumored that Synopsys had attempted to buy Forte and AutoESL, but neither of them was willing to be sold by their investors. It also seems as if Synfora had been trying to get other companies intrested in purchasing them, but clear got no better offers. At least one thing is certain about this acquisition, is that re-use is possible to some degree in that the first 3 letters of the name can be saved J

So, now Synopsys has really started to round out its ESL offering and has a credible synthesis strategy – far better than their previous attempt with Synphony, which went from MATLAB to RTL. This does fit in well with their Synplicity strategy as Synfora was primarily targeting FPGAs, but Synopsys still has to add SystemC to the language mix and given that C++ had only recently been added, it is unclear how stable and robust that code is.

Thanks for the commentary, Brian!

Question: Do you or any of your readers have any insight on what happened with Synphony, why was it not more successful?

On the face of it, would seem like an important contribution and market....

best,
Holly
