TechBites Says: National’s SolarMagic is a very promising technology for helping PV arrays run at peak efficiency under real-world conditions where manufacturing variations, aging, and real-world conditions could otherwise drag down a system’s overall performance. Unfortunately, National has been very tight-lipped about the deails of how the technology works so I’ve been unable to verify or deny their impressive claims. While neither of the partner firms are really industry leaders, these two announcements about panel manufacturers actually integrating SolarMagic into their products does provide some validation of National’s intent to become a major player in the solar power space. National semiconductor Says: National Semiconductor is collaborating with two leading solar panel produces to incorporate their SolarMagic technology in their products. National’s SolarMagic SM3320 is the first analog-intensive power management chipset in a new category of in-panel electronics that improves power output, reliability and cost-effectiveness of solar systems. SolarMagic enables each solar panel to produce the maximum energy regardless of whether other panels in the array are under-performing due to mismatch.SolarMagic monitors and maximizes the energy harvest of each individual PV panel through a combination of advanced algorithms and leading-edge mixed-signal technology. Extensive testing has shown that SolarMagic can recoup up to 71 percent of power lost to mismatch – regardless of cell technology – giving installation owners more predictable power output and increased return on investment.
