Mercedes SLS AMG E-CELL

Mercedes won't say what the range is on its SLS AMG E-CELL electric supercar. But it may not matter, as this video shows, if you can get there superquick and in style, as former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard found out in an exhilarating test drive.

As part of its "AMG Performance 2015" strategy, with production scheduled for 2012, Mercedes Benz has provided further details of the all-electric sports car. Reducing emissions and fuel consumption does not cut 0-60 mph performance much (4 sec) compared to the internal combustion engine version (3.8 sec).

Power comes from four synchronous 132 hp (162 ft-lb torque) electric motors, one near each wheel, driving one transmission on each of the front and rear axles. By not placing the motors within the wheel, unspring weight (that hung from the suspension) is reduced for better handling and road response.
