Free Spice for Your Circuits

Yesterday I went to a seminar sponsored by NuHorizons the purpose of which was to present Linear Technology's free LTspice program. Mike Engelhardt whose job at Linear Technology is to continually develop the simulator gave the seminar. Who is a better person to ask a question of pertaining to a program than the author himself?

Having fewer bit-transitions reduces the power consumption, as Jay notd, but having only one bit-transition per count makes it relatively safe to use Gray codes when you need a counter in one clock domain feeding values to a client in another.

BTW, I just saw an application for a Gray code in multiprocessor communications. If you're trying to embed a ring logical communication architecture into a hypercube physical architecture, assigning logical to physical processors in Gray-code order makes sure that all logical neighbors are physical neighbors, too.

Welcome to all!

Even though 0's and 1's are black and white, the answer lies in the gray between. So let us all share the coolest of counters. Why is it cooler you may ask? That is no mere figure of speech; Gray counters use half the dynamic power of a binary counter.
