Hello Guitar and Gear community

Hello folks, welcome to the Guitars & Gear community. Over my many years covering the electronics industry for various trade pubs, I’ve come to meet a countless number of folks in our industry who are also talented musicians. Many of them are guitarists.  At one time I think it was mandatory to play guitar and know the words to Mustang Sally to be a member of CMP Media’s and later UP Media Group’s Printed Circuit Design magazine http://www.pcdandf.com/cms/. Aart de Geus, Ted Vucurevich, Grant Pierce, Mark Miller, & Simon Davidmann are just a few of the many guitarists in the EDA industry. There are many guitarists here at my new gig at Xilinx, and I’m sure you know a few at your company.

So here's a good place to start for those interested in "how the heck does that effect work". An interesting dissertation on the technology of phase shifters and flangers.

A question to our readers: What Billboard top 10 pop song was one of the first to use flanging techniques in its production? And, no, it wasn't the Beatles with Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, although that piece certainly did use this technique.

Hi Peter, thanks for letting us know about the link. Actually, that's exactly why I thought this community might be neat and something special in this community because there are a lot of folks in this biz who are not afraid of a soldering iron, doing something creative and innovative. It's cool simply because a lot of the best in class gear is tube based, though the DSP stuff has come a long way. I'm just getting back into playing after many years of not playing. I hadn't been into a music shop in years, and I'm amazed at what's out there today. Also I can’t express how cool Youtube is for sharing guitar lessons, reviews and music. In addition to finding tab/lessons for just about any song online, Youtube has a ton of backing tracks. So for example if you want to practice solos in 12-bar blues--there are countless backing tracks for you to play over—slow blues, Texas shuffle, Chicago blues, delta blues—you name it. I'm having great fun and learning a great deal.

Over the weekend, I'll put up discussion strings on:

--Do it yourself amps and effects
--Repair shops & gear store reviews
--Guitar reviews
--Amp reviews
--Effects reviews
--Blues backing tracks
--Rock backing tracks
--help me fix it

Hi Mike,

looking forward to seeing how this community develops. I put my electric guitar away a long time ago and have been playing classical guitar with a couple of friends for years now. Not necessarily great, but we persevere. Maybe time to get it out again!

One area I was interested in that I'd like to get back to is home brew instrument amplifiers and effects. Maybe this comment belongs in the Hobby Electronics, but perhaps valuable here as well. There are a ton of sites out there that have DIY projects focused on guitar gadgets, modifications, amplifiers etc.

The site that is linked to the Hobby Electronics forum has some interesting, relevant and free DIY articles - Everyday Practical Electronics (www.epemag.com). Happy to post a few of the other sites I've found that have similar content if any of the members of this community are interested.

Hmmm...you can usually find schematics for these on the web but at a cursory glance I can't find one. Did you try their customer support?

My stupid Rokit 8 studio monitor broke...think they'll give me a schematic so I can fix it? Probably not.

Hi folks, I've recently reignited an old passion for playing the guitar and I know a ton of folks in the industry are fabulous musicians so I started this community to let folks share their tales, gear reviews and gig information with the rest of the folks in the community. Please feel free to help us build this community by letting your other musician friends know about the community and by contributing some great content.
