Which is quickest... GPRS or 3G
Ok, perhaps a bit of a misleading title, and would probably be better saying "which has the fastest call setup and cell handover times"…
I’ll explain.
My client is one of the UK emergency services and use mobile computers fitted in the vehicles to send telemetry back to the control centre. The original MK1 version of these computer had 2 x cellular modems on-board but only worked with GPRS, and for the tiny data packets of 100 bytes or so, it was great technology.
But time, tide and the supplies wait for no one, and the new MK2 computers are fitted with Siemens HC25 GPRS / 3G cellular modems, and all is not peachy in the world.
Testing is showing us that these new MK2 computers are much slower at sending data bursts. The old MK1’s would send a message in 1 to 2 seconds, the MK2’s from 2 to several hundred seconds. The problem is, there are so many new variables in the mix that it’s difficult to ascertain exactly where the problem lies.
One thing that were thinking, is that 3G call setup may be slower than GPRS and this is made worse in a moving vehicle that keeps having to be handed off from one cell to another.
I would be interested in people’s ideas or thoughts on this.
