Actually this is a common misunderstanding when reading abstracts, descriptions and claims. The claims have to be interpreted by the lexicon of the patent application and the prosecution history. Many of these applications turn on how definitions are crafted. Keep in mind that claims may be made up until the application is issued.

So, it's pretty premature to assess what this application means. But looking at the figures and definitions briefly, claims 1 actually is claiming a very specific "computer system" that stores specific data structures.

I can't be certain but, having scanned the users manual, it appears that the eZ430 does not support standards-based communication. (Can anyone confirm or refute that observation?) If this is the case then, if you develop a device based on this MCU + radio, you must develop both ends of the link. You can't develop, for example, a device that can communicate with, interrogate, or control other standards-based RF devices. This isn't the end of the world but, historically, devices that require one company's products to occupy both ends of a link do not fare as well in the market as devices that work and play well with others. Thank you for your email bringing this matter to our attention.

We are sorry to hear that you are not happy with this product. We endeavour to maintain a good level of quality and if a product is found to be wanting we will take steps to correct or remove it from sale. We have sold this product for many years and we have not received any other complaints about the quality. It would appear that the product importer has changed the contents without making us aware of the change. Unfortunately, this does happen sometimes but it is difficult for us to monitor given the number of items that we sell.

Please note that Quasar Electronics Limited is just one of many hundreds of UK resellers of this product which is imported into Europe by the AVSL Group under the Order Code 710.368. We have no direct involvement in the design or manufacturing of the product or alterations that are made to the specifications.

We have forwarded your comments on to the AVSL Group and are currently awaiting their comments on the matter.

The picture we use is taken from their website at http://avslgroup.com/images/hires/700/710368_CO1.jpg. We have asked them to explain why the picture and contents are not the same.

We will await their comments and forward these on to you.

As an iPhone user who is sick to death of having to do battle with iTunes everytime I want to download something, having some options available on a more open platform would be nice.

I also like the idea that anybody can develop applications without having to be authorised by the supplier.

Was it just an oversight on the review or is there no Bluetooth ?

I really could have used this technology several years ago. Common wisdom was that the interference would forever preclude WiFi and Bluetooth in a small form factor. I'm glad to see that this bit of "common wisdom" has been disproved.

Thanks for drawing attention to Go. BTW, I think it goes into Embedded Software ;>

I haven't spent a lot of time looking at the language but there are a few things right away that I applaud:
1. no pointer arithmetic
2. no type inheritance
3. explicit concurrency

It's still bogged down with some of C's unfortunate decisions, but it's better!

I could not agree more with Michael - as usual;)

This is from the Micrium website:"Micrium's stringent development process, strict coding standards, code reviews, and clear, concise, and exhaustive documentation combined as the foundation for a Validation Suite™ for µC/OS-II. The RTOS is ideal for use in such safety critical systems as avionics RTCA DO-178B and EUROCAE ED-12B, as well as IEC61508, the standard for transportation and nuclear systems."

Just an example: For DO-178B the whole system is certified, so you need to redo the certification each time you put your device into a new system. At the moment there are some initial discussions with TUV in Germany not to redo the whole certification process all over again and again, but have some parts certified. Only the new things will need re-certification. (http://www.osadl.org/Safety-Critical-Linux.safety-critical-linux.0.html)

Micrium is able to provide a Validation Suite™ for µC/OS-II which simplifies the process of certifying the RTOS.

Regards,
Robert

What I would be really interested in is hearing about your experiences with the Silicon Blue FPGAs -- are they as good (low-power) as claimed? Cheers -- Max

	            	            Max,

There is no such thing as "certified by the FDA" or "certified by the FAA". Likewise, the fact that any particular version of any off-the-shelf software, such as an uC/OS-II, has been "certified consistent with FDA or FAA standards" does not imply it will be safe in another product on another processor with another compiler, etc.

Cheers,

I was waiting the PSoC (1) when it was only "rumored", but got really disappointed when it did get released, because Cypress did not open up the digital block programming to the end user. I did obtain the early PSoC ICE (hm some 249$), but it was left collecting dust.

PSoC 3 (and 5) are the real ones, where end user can use VERILOG to write own custom peripherals.

Free samples of PSoC 3 are already offered (3 different packages), my samples and starterkit are on their way already.

For the CPLD part cypress uses their WARP compiler. So it actually not that important if all the things can be done with the GUI and mouse, for those who want, there is pure HDL code development also possible.

I think it is also worth pointing out that when this book came out (2007) they were in the midst of a language war. e was on the decline while Vera was being replaced by SystemVerilog. The reason for e's decline was constant pressure on it not being a fully open language. Since then Cadence has made it open, but the point is this book does not get into a language war. It presents the case for using aspect oriented approaches and the value that they provide.

I just wish we had an aspect oriented design language such that the whole notion of ESL could be handled by adding detail into a description without having to modify what had already been verified. Adding architecture as a set of aspect oriented extension, adding timing or power annotations etc. Maybe some day.

This release from Cypress led me to write a blog article (http://www.techbites.com/20090925592/myblog/blog/who-will-be-leader-in-esl.html) as well, but coming from the ESL side of things, I had a somewhat different take. With a product such as this, the design flow for it is almost as important as the hardware. What is the point of all of this programmable stuff if nobody can use it? Thus, I postulated that Cypress depends for its existence on the quality of the ESL flow that they provide and thus we can ask - is Cypress a hardware company, or potentially one of the leading EDA companies in the ESL field?

	            	            Hi Brian

I work for JTAG Technologies and I came across Techbites during an idle(?)lunchtime net-browse.

Anyway I thought I should explain what we are trying to achieve here. Testing is a broad church it seems and can be split into several different arenas. Device Test, PCB Test and System test.

At JTAG technologies we concentrate (though not exclusively) on PCB-level and system-level testing. We then try and sub-divide the tests we perform into 'structural tests' and 'functional(-style) tests'. JTAG (aka IEEE 1149.1 boundary-scan) was initially devised to perform a structural test of the PCB tracks between JTAG compliant devices. If tracks were shorted or open-circuit this could be detected and faults reported. However soon after it's introduction folk in the PCB test arena saw that you could use the JTAG EXTEST feature of one chip to stimulate another in a kind of functional test way - though not at true system speed. Typical examples of such functional-style tests wer those performed on memory devices. All such tests on non-JTAG logic via a JTAG part became known as 'cluster' tests.

Now, most JTAG pcb test systems on the market allow you generate such cluster tests
but all (to my knowledge) have used proprietary test syntax or test languanges to achieve this - JTAG Technologies included until now. However by making it possible to generate cluster tests using a well-subscribed, open-source languange like Python we figured we could make a lot of peoples lives a bit easier and open up the use of JTAG-oriented cluster testing to PCB hardware designers and test engineers alike.

I hope this explains matters a bit more succinctly. I will endeavour to make our PRs
a bit more reader friendly in future.

Regards

James

The original 8-bit PSoC 1 which uses the M8C proprietary microcontroller has been shipping for many years. The new PSoC 3 (8-bit enhanced 8051) and PSoC 5 (32-bit ARM) extend the processing capability and additional analog and digital resources. A DMA controller and LCD controller are also included. The digital fabric can be configured using predefined digital functional blocks or with Verilog.

The PSoC 1 also has many interesting features like the high voltage family with power MOSFETs on board with a rating of 1A at 32V and current sense amplifiers with the same 32V rating. There LED controls have incredible flexibility allowing feedback control including temperature compensation.

Some additional digital features not mentioned above are: DALI, DMX512, IrDA. And some more analog modules are: analog filters, instrument amplifiers, comparators, 1.3V reference, modulators, correlators, peak detectors and anything you can create from a custom user module.

Saw a similar problem in ring network hardware years ago. A relay would cut the node out of the network if node power failed, or on command. We had a problem with oxides on the relay contacts weakening the network signal passing through.

The solution was to write a little app that would toggle the relay a few hundred times to knock the oxides off the point of contact - then to switch to relays with better contacts.
