A few problems with this application:

1. WiFi has a very limited range and all long-range multi-channel wireless schemes have long latencies. If you're going to have to be THAT close to the vehicle, why not be in it?

2. I do hope they have "apply the brake" as the default fail-safe condition. Even then, during the time between radio-link-lost and vehicle-stopped there's no steering. You want a ride in THAT cab?

3. Steering is far more coarse than the real thing. That's fine when you're shooting movies around an airport tarmac but when you're trying to make small adjustments in lane position, subtlety is in order. I counted 1 1/2 turns rack-to-rack on that vehicle, which strikes me as a very small number to begin with. But that translates to 1/2 turn rack-to-rack on the iPhone or a 3:1 reduction in steering sensitivity. And before you say, "That's just an implementation detail" take your own phone for a spin for 1 1/2 turns with positional accuracy (and without dropping it).

4. Two words: Peripheral vision. Four more words: It aint got any.

5. And finally, at least in this country, I'm pretty sure it isn't legal to remotely operate a vehicle on public ways in any state. Technology doesn't get around that one.

So, cute demo but what can you do with it... REALLY.
